# Garage door off its track? Three fixes and when the cheapest is right

> Three options for a garage door that has come off its track: a technician setting it back on its track, a new track section and rollers, or a new section or door. What each one covers, what to ask for in writing, and when the cheapest fix is the right call.

Your door may have stopped crooked, with one side lower than the other or a roller out of its track. **Our view:** the price you are given may cover one of three different jobs.

## First, before any price: stop

**Our advice:** stop using the door. Do not run the opener again, and unplug it if you can reach the plug without going near the door. Do not try to lift the door, push it back into the track or force it in either direction. Keep people, pets and cars clear of it, and leave the car where it is if the door is resting on it. Then call a garage door technician.

On spring work, [HomeAdvisor's repair-cost page](https://www.homeadvisor.com/cost/garages/repair-a-garage-door/) says "Because springs hold hundreds of pounds of tension, leave this job to a pro."

No part of this page is a how-to. **Our advice:** springs, cables, brackets, drums and the torsion shaft are a technician's work, never yours. For what puts a door off its track in the first place, see [our guide to a door that jumps the track](/blog/garage-door-off-track-causes-fixes), and for the first few minutes, [our off-track page](/situations/garage-door-off-track).

## Option 1, the good: a technician sets the door back on its track

**Our view:** in this option the technician sets the rollers back in the track and lines the track up, with no new track and no new rollers. It fits only when the track and the rollers came through undamaged.

**What to know:** [Clopay's track guide](https://www.clopaydoor.com/buyingguide/garage-door-track-options) says "Damaged or misaligned tracks are a common source of problems and should never be ignored." That is one door maker's page; other makers word it their own way.

**Our advice, what to ask:** whether the track is straight or bent, what the technician sees on each roller, and what caused the door to leave the track.

## Option 2, the better: a new track section and new rollers

**Our view:** in this option the technician replaces the bent part of the track and the rollers that rode in it, then sets the door back on.

**What to know:** [Clopay's service guide](https://www.clopaydoor.com/residential/buyingguide/service-and-replacement) asks "Are the tracks on either side of your garage door bent or twisted?" and says "If you have issues with your track, contact a professional for repair." The same page says "Track issues can contribute to added stress on your opener."

**What it costs, as one guide reads it:** [HomeAdvisor's repair-cost page](https://www.homeadvisor.com/cost/garages/repair-a-garage-door/) (updated Jun 20, 2026) says "A track repair can cost as little as $5 for a basic bracket or up to $400 for a full track replacement." That is one aggregator's range, not a price for your door, and it does not price the rollers.

**Our advice:** your written quote beats any published range.

**Who does the work:** [Amarr's owner's manual](https://sites.myamarr.biz/content/dam/amarr/com/us/en/documents/residential/owner's-manual/owner's-manual---english/residential-owners-manual-english.pdf) lists tracks, cables, springs, steel brackets, rollers and hinges, and says "A trained garage door technician must replace these items to ensure garage door safety." That is Amarr's manual; other makers word it their own way.

**Our advice, what to ask:** which track section is being replaced, and how many rollers.

[Clopay's track guide](https://www.clopaydoor.com/buyingguide/garage-door-track-options) says "Using the wrong track can lead to unsafe operation, premature component failure, and even property damage."

**Our advice:** ask the technician to confirm in writing that the new section matches your door.

**If a cable is on the quote too:** [HomeAdvisor's repair-cost page](https://www.homeadvisor.com/cost/garages/repair-a-garage-door/) (updated Jun 20, 2026) says "Cable repairs run $100 to $400."

**Our advice:** ask for the cable as its own line on the quote.

## Option 3, the best: a new section, or a new door

**Our view:** this option is for panels that bent as the door came off. The technician replaces the bent section, or, when several are bent, the whole door.

**A new section.** [Amarr's article on replacement panels](https://blog.amarr.com/garage-door-replacement-panels-when-to-repair-or-replace) (Sep 12, 2023) says "If there has been harm to your garage door following an accident or a natural disaster, but only one or two sections have been affected, you could replace just the sections." It goes on "This option is much more straightforward if your garage is relatively new such that it was bought within the last 10 to 15 years." It also says "It is important to note that a new section may not match to the older sections due to the colors fading over time."

**A new door.** [Clopay's panel article](https://www.clopaydoor.com/blog/post/blog/2016/09/28/can-i-replace-my-garage-door-panels) says "If you notice sagging or bent panels, peeling or cracked paint, or major damage across multiple panels, a full replacement might be the more cost-effective option in the long run." The same page says "Panel replacement costs less than a full door, but the job involves heavy panels and spring tension, making it risky for DIY." Clopay sells doors, so read it as the maker's view.

**What a new door costs, as one guide reads it:** [HomeAdvisor's installation page](https://www.homeadvisor.com/cost/garages/install-a-garage-door/) (updated Jun 17, 2026) says "Garage door replacement costs between $754 and $1,707, with most homeowners spending around $1,231 for your new door installation."

**Our advice, what to ask:** whether a matching section is still made for your door, the price of the section installed, and the price of a new door, on the same visit and in writing.

## When the cheapest fix is the right call

**Our view:** Option 1 can be the right call. It fits when the technician finds the track straight, the rollers sound and the panels flat, and says so in writing, and when the cause is something they can fix on the spot. That is our judgment from the sources above, not a door maker's rule.

**Our view:** it does not fit when the track is bent or twisted, which is Option 2, or when the panels took the damage.

On the panels, [Amarr's panel article](https://blog.amarr.com/garage-door-replacement-panels-when-to-repair-or-replace) says "You may also consider replacing your door if there are more than two panels with serious damage." It adds "In some cases, the destruction has affected more than just the door and involves some of the mechanical integrity of the mechanism as well."

If you hear grinding or see worn rollers once the door is running again, [our page on what rollers and hinges tell you](/blog/garage-door-roller-hinge-wear) covers what to listen for.

## What to put on any off-track quote

**Our advice:** ask for these four lines on every quote. Two written quotes with the same four lines are easy to compare; two that leave them out are not.

1. What caused the door to leave the track, in the technician's words.
2. Whether the track is being realigned or replaced, and which section.
3. How many rollers are being replaced, and whether any cable is on the job.
4. For bent panels, the section price and the new door price as two lines.

## What to do right now

**Our advice:**

1. Leave the door where it is, do not run the opener, and keep everyone clear.
2. Call a garage door technician and say the door is off its track.
3. When the quote arrives, check it against the four lines above and ask for anything missing in writing.
